From the Margin of my Bible

2 Kings 5:13 "...if the prophet had bid thee do some great thing, wouldest thou not have done it? how much rather then, when he saith to the, Wash, and be clean?"

Isn't this the way that we as people respond to the love of God?

Salvation is so simple!

"Laura's Heart" part six

By: Christina Banks

Laura sat down in front of her computer in the upstairs hallway of her Grandmother’s house. She decided to forgo her usual Wednesday afternoon nap. There was something important on her mind; something that she needed to do. She had read Jeremy’s letter over twice more since she had gotten home from work at the daycare. She knew that she needed to respond in like manner. Opening up a blank word document she began.

Jeremy,

I appreciate your transparency. I think it fair to let you know that I have not been scared off by your last communication. There are many things that you talked about that I found very intriguing, and would like to learn more. I also believe that I owe you the same transparency as you showed me. I could write many of the same disclaimers that were written in your letter, but do not deem it necessary to do so. Though I found no “red flags” as I read what you had to say, I want you to read with the same things in mind. I strive to be accurate, open and completely honest in what follows.

She began to carefully lay out how God had been working in her life. She talked about her family situation, her high school and college experiences. She shared honestly about her stubborn streak, and how God had to get her attention by her financial situation in college. She told how she had been a kindergarten teacher in San Francisco, and the way that God had blessed her. She tried to give a true picture of who she was, even her failings and fears.

There are a few things that scare me to death, and one of those is meeting new people. I would rather stand up in front of the whole student body of my old college and give an announcement (which really happened once) than to sit one on one with someone I don’t know.

Laura put an end to her epistle. So here we are. What will come of this? Only God knows that now. I am just praying for wisdom and discernment. She also prayed that God would give her the courage to send the letter to Jeremy.

Laura saved the document onto a CD and packed up her things for Awana. She had to teach that night, but she was already prepared. There was still an hour before she would have to leave with her parents for church, but she wanted to get over to their house early. She said good bye to her grandparents as she rushed out the door and to her car.

The mile ride to her parent’s house was over very quickly. She jumped out of the car and hurried into the house. She only had a thin fall jacket, and the weather was getting too cold to wear it. She would have to look into getting a winter coat soon.

“You’re here early!” her mom called from the living room. “Did you need to use our computer to talk to that boy again?”

Laura came in and hugged her mom and dad. “Yes. I also wanted you to read his latest communication. I think you will find it very informative.”

Laura handed the four pages of single spaced size 10 font to her mom and sat down at the computer table. She loaded the file while her mom was reading and logged onto E-harmony. There were two new matches to look at, but Laura did so half-heartedly. She knew that she needed to keep her eyes open, but none of these guys compared to the young man that she was about to send her life history to.

“Wow!” Laura’s mom said as she finished the letter and handed it back to her daughter.

“Do you want to read it, Daddy?” Laura said, trying to hand the pages to her dad.

He took one look at the size of the words and the number of pages and shook his head. “Tell me when the picture book version comes out. I’ll read it then.”

Both Laura and her mom laughed at this. “So mom, what do you think? Did you see any ‘red flags’ as you read it?”

“No, I can’t say that I did. He sounds like the kind of guy that would be good for you.”

“I know. I keep thinking that there must be something I am missing. I have been praying so earnestly that God would protect my heart and help me to think clearly about all of this.”

Laura’s Dad laughed. “The way you two sound, you would think that you were talking about engagement and marriage, not a letter from a young man that you started talking to a month and a half ago.”

“I know it sounds strange, but think about it this way, Jeremy and I are both on E-harmony for the purpose of finding a potential spouse. So in a way we are talking about more than just a letter. On the other hand, you’re right, it is just a letter. This is why I am spending so much time praying about this.”

“We are praying too.” Laura’s mom assured her.

“Thanks! I need all the prayer I can get about this. Mom would you like to read my response to Jeremy’s communication?”

Laura and her mom spent the next fifteen minutes going over Laura’s return letter to Jeremy. Just before they left for church Laura sent it off to him. “Well, the ball is in his court again.” Laura said as they headed out the door.

Wednesday nights were a favourite time for Laura. She loved to work with the kids and teach the Bible lesson during council time. Children’s ministry was a passion that God had placed on her heart and had gifted her for. Before she knew it, the program was over and it was time for choir practice. Laura, her mom and her Aunt Susan walked up the stairs from the basement laughing about the antics of the girls that they taught in Awana. It was Laura’s mom who changed the subject.

“Laura, did you tell Susan about the letter that you received from Jeremy?”

“Who is Jeremy?” Susan asked as Laura blushed.

“He is a young man that I have been communicating with for the last month.”

“Really!?!” Susan said, as if she saw what was really happening. Laura’s mom began to fill her aunt in on a few of the details.

“And so, he sent her four pages of tiny writing explaining where he was coming from.” Laura’s mom concluded her narrative.

“Listen, Aunt Susan, not many people know about this yet. I have been keeping a tight lid on it, because you know how rumours like to get started. I would like your input, however. Would you be willing to read his letter and tell me what you think? You might be able to see something that mom and I missed, since you aren’t so close to the situation.”

“I would love to read about this mystery man that you have come across. Can I let Uncle Tom read it too? It might be good to have a man’s perspective on this.”

“I wouldn’t mind having his advice either.” Laura handed the letter to Susan.

“Wow! This is long. Can I give this back to you tomorrow at school? I could tell you what I think then.”

“Sounds good!” Laura said smiling.

Laura’s mom opened the door to the auditorium. “Ladies, we had better hurry. It looks like they started choir practice without us!”

A Writer in My Backyard

Writing can be a lonely occupation. It's a solitary endeavor. I spend the greater part of my day with my hands on the keyboard, staring at the computer screen, my mind wandering far away from the walls of my office space. My characters become more real to me than the people living next door. I discuss things with them in private, and talk about them in public.

More than once I have had people ask me, "Is [insert name here] your brother?"

"Oh, no," I reply, "they are part of a story I am working on."

The strange looks that I have received after that explanation remind me that "normal" people don't understand writers. Yes, it is true, and I freely admit it - I live in an imaginary world. I have imaginary friends, and I sometimes forget that those friends are not "real".

It always excites me to meet up with other writers. One of the best things about Facebook has been networking with Authors and aspiring writers all over the globe. My circle of friends has grown, and I finally feel like I'm a part of the on-line writing community. Things in the "real" world, however, are very different. I am still alone. Working in my solitary way. Still, I continue on, enjoying my on-line community and wondering what it would be like to meet with other writers in person.

On Saturday, I finally had my chance to meet other writers in my community. The Deep River public library hosted a writing seminar with Michelle Desbarats. There were only sixteen openings, and I was fortunate to snag one of the spots. The seminar was more of a workshop than a teaching time. Michelle gave us several exercises to do, getting the creative juices flowing. It was a lot of fun, and challenging.

The seminar attracted many memoir writers, a few poets and others who were just interested in learning something about creative writing. One woman, Andrea, stood out from the crowd. She had a flamboyant personality and, during the introductions, announced that she had her first book, a mystery, off to a publishing house at that very moment.

Andrea, I came to find out, lives right around the corner from my house. Yes, I discovered, I have a writer in my backyard, and I didn't even know it. What a blessing to see that I'm not as alone as I thought.

Thank you for being part of my writing community! I appreciate that you took the time to read my post. There are exciting thing on the horizon for this blog. I promise to share more in the very near future!
